Hamilton County Health Department
Location: Chattanooga, TN
Description: Living Roofs, Inc. assisted on the design and performed the installation for a green roof on the Hamilton County Health Department. Funding from the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant Program (EECBG) was awarded to retrofit the existing roof with a green roof to serve a variety of environmental, economic, and educational purposes. As a retrofit, the project presented limitations in terms of existing conditions + load restrictions. Additionally, due to its high visibility from adjacent buildings and a viewing platform for building employees, the green roof needed to provide a visual amenity as well. An expanded plant list was developed and the extensive system was given more dimension through a series of raised mounds. Living Roofs, Inc. designed the mounds to reflect the terrain in the adjacent Prentice – Cooper State Forest and Wildlife Area, which is created by the Sequatchie River. We hope that the green roof will provide not only the environmental benefits of storm water run off mitigation and energy reductions but also increase the biodiversity in Chattanooga and demonstrate the positive impact of green roofs throughout the County. Here is a local news article in the Times Free Press about the installation.
