The Kiawah Island residence is located adjacent to a salt marsh on the coast of SC. Stone and slate chips meander through the soft textures and layers of grasses that provide shelter and forage for birds and insects.

The project’s use of natural materials, plant species that mimic the movement and seasonal color of the surrounding environment, and the accessible nature of the roofs create the perfect perch to witness the beauty and rhythms of the surrounding landscape.

The Act allows entities such as local governments, metropolitan planning organizations, Tribal governments, and nonprofits working with any government entities to apply for funding to implement efforts to help offset the effects of excess urban heat. Some examples of these mitigation efforts include tree planting and maintenance, green roofs, bus stop covers, cooling centers,and local heat mitigation education efforts.  

Studies have shown the impact of excess urban heat disproportionally affects lower-income communities and communities of color. To address this, the Act outlines that at least 50% of funding shall be awarded to projects in low-income and environmental justice communities. =

The Act authorizes $30 million for the program each year for Fiscal Years 2023-2030. To ensure the effectiveness of the grant program, HUD will establish an oversight board to select grant recipients and review the yearly progress of the grantees. Additionally, the oversight board will advise entities in coordination with representatives from the Environmental Protection Agency, Departments of Energy and Health and Human Services, non-profits with leadership in this area, and relevant academic experts.

The Seasonal Green Roof Technician (SGRT) is an entry level laborer position. Seasonal Green Roof Technicians help install green roof and paver systems and in maintaining existing green roofs. SGRTs are expected to have some experience working outdoors in all weather conditions. SGRTs are expected to be able to travel 100% of the time M-F; However, there will be days and weeks where our work is local and does not require overnight travel.

Initially, the person in this role will need to commit 20-30 hrs./wk., with the potential to grow into a full time/ 40 hrs./wk. The schedule is flexible within normal business hours Monday - Friday. • Developing conceptual designs from initial client communication and creating formal presentations and necessary documents for construction

• Translating planting plans and schedules into plant distribution plans to assist the crew with installation

There is no question that pollinators, particularly pollinating invertebrates such as bees, flies, butterflies and beetles, are of crucial importance to not only our own species’ agricultural efforts and global economies, but to the functioning of many of our planet’s major terrestrial ecosystems.  However, in the modern era, invertebrate pollinators suffer severe negative impacts from human activity such as urbanization and industrial agriculture.  Habitat loss and fragmentation, changes in land use, and agricultural pesticide applications are only a few of the anthropogenic factors contributing to declines in pollinator populations, to the ultimate detriment of ourselves and the biosphere.  This alarming trend has stirred many researchers to seek new methods of supporting pollinator species in the face of the existential threats they are experiencing.  Urban agriculture, and green roofing in particular, offers a range of potential benefits to pollinating invertebrates, such as forage, refuge, and viable habitat, within the very environment that is replacing their native habitats.

For her study, with Living Roofs’ assistance, Linnea chose the Asheville Garage Apartments to observe pollinator activity on a mature urban green roof during the months of June and July of 2020.  The Garage Apartments green roof is a 7,500 sqft meadow roof designed and installed by LRI in Summer of 2017, and has since been maintained by our team.  The roof’s plant community is a mix of native flowering perennials and grasses chosen intentionally for their benefits to pollinators, and includes a range of species that are intended to provide flowers throughout the entire growing season.  Several times a week during the study period, Linnea observed, recorded, and analyzed the habits of the various pollinating insects that visited a section of the green roof’s flowering plants.  Several interesting and even surprising results were harvested from these observations.  For instance, flies (Diptera) far outnumbered any other insect type, including bees, in their visitation of green roof flowers.  Tunic Flower (Petrorhagia saxifraga), a ground cover plant species growing in popularity on green roofs, was the subject of much Diptera pollinator attention, while Chives (Allium schoenoprasum) attracted bees more than the other plants in the study plot. Overall, the roof was observed to attract a wide variety of pollinating insects from Asheville’s urban center, providing more tangible evidence to support the conclusion that green roofs can serve as beneficial pollinator habitat.

The benefits of green roofs, particularly in an urban setting, are varied and numerous, including contributing to stormwater management, reducing the urban heat island effect, improving air and runoff water quality, decreasing building energy consumption, prolonging the lifespan of the building’s roof, and increasing the aesthetic and recreational value of the building. It has also long been assumed that green roofs contribute to increasing overall urban biodiversity and creating viable habitat for wildlife by adding green space back into the landscape as a whole. However, there is still much empirical study to be done to demonstrate just how green roofs are contributing to wildlife and pollinator conservation, and how they could be more effectively utilized to support some of our more threatened species. We at Living Roofs are thrilled to have been a part of Linnea’s assessment of green roof benefits for pollinators, and we are excited to see where she takes this experience to influence the coming generations of wildlife ecologists and green infrastructure developers as we work together to conserve our vulnerable pollinating species and repair our damaged ecosystems.
